I would like to sand down and paint (the same colour as my walls)a varnished wood fire surround.i do occasionally use the gas coal effect fire and knowing that paint is flammable,i am wondering if this is safe to do.i am sure i am being over cautious?
please help as refurbishing my lounge is at a standstill now!!!!
Thanks

You shouldnt really have any problems with doing this. The wooden surround wont get that hot that it would do any harm.

Thanks for quick response-although it does mean i have no excuse to get on with it now!Forgot to mention-i dislike decorating!!!

If its varnished you really need a primer like Zinnser bin to help stop it chipping off after.

Yes it has got some kind of varnish on so i was going to try and sand it first, but it is quite ornate.
so i need to sand.put this stuff on and then paint?
can i buy it from b&q???

I think you can but otherwise you would find it in one of the decorator centres.
