Removal of ceramic wall tile adhesive

Has anybody got a brainwave in this direction. Have just removed 14 year old tiles and the adhesive left behind on the walls looks daunting!! I am intending to just paint the area so the walls are going to have to be pretty good.

If it was a pre mixed adhesive, try warm water or even a wall paper stripper, this usually softens the adhesive so it can be scraped off with a good quality scraper.
