We are building a leanto conservatory at the back of our house. At the mo we have a kitchen door leading outside, this is situated on a side wall of the house leading into the garden. we would like to brick this one up or convert into a window. Our ideal plan would be to open up a new door on another wall in the kitchen which would lead directly into the planned conservatory.
Do we :
a, Have to seek planning to brickup the old doorway.
b, " " " " " convert to a window.
c, " " " " " Open up a new doorway intothe conservatory?

First you need to understand that Planning (Permission) & Building Control (Regulations) are 2 completely different things run by completely different Council departments; they are often connected but can be mutually exclusive. It’s most unlikely you’ll need Planning Permission for this work but it’s worth checking as in some cases it is. Some of the work does come under Building Regulations & will be subject to Building Control & inspection;

a, brickup the old doorway.
Means of escape (in case of fire) must be no worse than it previously was; as you’re providing another door into the conservatory, which presumably has an external door, it should be OK.

b, " " " " " convert to a window.
No but the means of escape applies, as above.

c, " " " " " Open up a new doorway into the conservatory?
Creating a new opening will require notification to Building Control (fee involved) who will want to inspect the opening & new lintel installation before the door is fitted & in some cases may require you to provide structural calculations for the lintel. You must also fit an external (insulation) grade door between the main dwelling & cons or the cons will have to comply with Building Regs. (almost impossible). Many folks remove the door after getting a building compliance certificate but this will dramatically increase your heating bills in winter. :cry:

Any electrical work, heating systems & the use of safety glass where this applies within the conservatory must also comply with Building Regs.
