My wife has for some reason decided that we should buy some dwarf fruit trees to put in pots in the back garden

Living in NE England, the weather isn't too goos and I'm not convinced fruit will grow very well

OK, apples and maybe pears would be OK

Bur surely, a cherry tree is a bit of a 'pipe dream'

Anyway to keep the peace, I'll just get them, but dwarf trees seem so much mre expensive

There are trees in the local supermarkets, at about £5

Surely, as long as you prune them OK, any fruit tree would be Ok for a pot.

Am I right, or would I really need to but dwarf trees ?

thanks for any advice you can offer

Putting a full size tree in a pot and pruning it hard will just make its short life a misery and you will eventually loose it.
I bought some mini fruit trees last year (just £10 each) which are suitable for pots, supplied as 5' tall and only growing to 6 or 7'. Amazingly, only 2 or 3 months after planting I got a few pieces of fruit (not expected until 2nd year). They are now in full bloom on their second year.
No advertising intended, but this is where I got mine and the site has videos explaining how to plant or pot them;

avoid the cherry tree as you won't see any fruit worth having unless you net the entire area.

we had one for 4 years and every year the local pidgeons eat the lot before they even rippened :evil:
