What is the safe distance between kitchen sink and cooker?

Hi, can anybody help me?

I have just been offered a house by the Housing Association, in which the kitchen sink is right next to the cooker outlet.

I have an electric cooker and this seems really dodgy to me. I can visualise all sorts of disasters happening - from burns when washing up to the cooker catching fire because of water damage and burning the house down!

I'm a bit worried - does anyone know what the regulations are regarding this?

Thanks

Considering your point about water damage to your cooker - would it be any worse than a pan on the hob boiling over?

Thanks Stephenf for your helpful reply. Quoted this to the Housing Association and they are re-doing the kitchen for me :D
