I have some damp is which eight feet off of the floor in the kitchen and which I think is as the result of worn-out bricks or poor pointing (although it still looks okay from the oustide and my NON-builder eyes!) which has come through a nine-inch NON-cavity wall. There is no damp coming from the room above, so that rules that one out! One builder suggested a quick fix with two coats of Thompson Waterseal (about £30) to seal the wall, although as I do not plan to move soon this may not be the best option. I feel that I have read somewhere that covering bricks with a sealant is not a good idea too? Any advice?

The waterproofing you're talking about isn't really a sealant as such. It may be the best "bodge" as a quick fix.
The best job would be to rake out and repoint, this is messy and expensive, and still may not solve the problem entirely if the bricks themselves are porous, so they may still need a waterproofing coating.
You may also find that re-rendering the inside wall keeps any damp back.
Or you could "dry line" the internal wall, and leave it damp.
