I am about to tile a small bathroom with a vanity unit and a bath shower. where is the best place to start from?

The centre of any wall, since each wall requires you to start from the centre anyway.

but that could mean that in the corners of the wall there is 1 inch of tile on one wall and 3 inches on the other. I thought it was supposed to flow around the room as one!?

no it doesnt flow around the room as one, treat each wall as an indivdual wall, try reading the sticky at the top of the tiling forum, it will tell you all you need to know, including where to start, mrGC has been kind enought to spend 54 years typing out the help youll need you could be kind enough to look at it.
