installing waste units in basin

what is the criteria for installing unslotted waste unit in basin in bathroom?
when would you use slotted waste unit?

I think this has been answered already.

Anyway, use a sloted waste if the OVERFLOW from the basin is part of the cast structure of a porcelain basin. If the waste is just a plain hole, with no porcelain behind it, then no need to use a sloted waste.
 
I assume then that there needs to be an external connected if unslotted unit is used?

correct. usually a black flexible pipe about 12" long and a plastic waste fitting with a plastic port on the side.
