which is to say you carry a load of stuff you probably won't need for any specific given job.
If you were going to a central heating install you could order the parts and have them delivered. leaving you with essential hand tools.
I didn't say it was easy, I said it was do-able..
your "job" doesn't begin until you pull up in front of the house that you are working at, just as mine doesn't begin until I pull up in front of the place that I work.
you aren't earning money until you get there.. if you drove around all day you don't get paid..
you do job, just like I do
you drive a vehicle to that job, just like I do
you get paid for doing a job, just like I do
you don't pay for the bits you use ( you pass the cost on, it costs you personally nothing ), just like I don't..
but at the end of the day, I don't get to write off the cost of my vehicle and it's running, or claim back tax on it, nor do I ask the person giving paying me for extra to cover those costs.
guess the tax man must be wrong with all those allowances for vehicles then

alot of jobs you don't know what tools and materials you will need until you get there; your van has to be stocked for most likely scenario's.
On my van I have a van vault for all power tools and several other toolboxes and lots of parts. Not possible to bring this by any other means. Millions who can use public transport do, I cannot.
You chosing to drive to work is a luxury many cannot afford. My use of the van is a nessecity.

I think your right. If only my van was a top of the range luxury car I'd enjoy my job alot more, instead its an oil burning skip on wheels.
There are plenty of people that don't have a clue, for a start, the comment with regard to my job doesn't start untill i get to my job, no my JOB starts as soon as i pick up my daily paper work which is just before i get to the van, and i am never off work only today i am undating the website, creating good knows how many orders for next week, got to tidy my van, got to sort the garage for the impending materials, on top of this i have to email accountant, i've already done my invoicing.
These people think because we change XX per hour we make XX per hour.
next yr i'll buy a 30K luxury est car just to go pricing up jobs. then see what they say about the labour i charge.

my personal fave customers/knobheads come out with is;
£xx an hour?! £xx 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year you must earn £xxxxxxxxx pounds!

no I've never run a company, and when I was self employed it wasn't properly self employed, I worked sub contract / labour only for a larger company..
I have no doubt that you have overheads and lots to do, I was never disputing that.
I originally disputed that the OP who was ****ed at losing a job to a lower quote was surprised that the customer thought that £900 for 4 days work was a lot..
It then went on to arguing that my having to use a car to get to my job was as essential as you using your vans to get to work ( my car is actually a van BTW.. an Escort.75, I had to get it to take the benders with me to site when I was working sub contract. Irony, no? ).
someone suggested that I could go via public transport even though it's impractical in order to get there on time, just as it's impractical for you to take all the tools you'd need on there.
in essence I was arguing that if you and I both earned £450 a week take home, I still have to get my car / van payments out of that, and petrol, road tax MOT and other things, whereas that's all spending money for you besides the things that we both have to do ( food, mortgage etc, )

just out of interest can you break down the £9.50 / hour overheads that you have?

now that is a much more clear and concise argument. however once you have travelled to work you are there. a self employed guy will have running around to do. customers will expect a tradesman to come in a van and have the majority of items he needs. A tradesman will also be expected to have a sign written van by many customers. Thats the way the tax man sees it as well, which is why there are certain tax allowances, but a tradesman will still have to pay out for a large percentage of those things, as well as covering for them when he may take time off (god forbid) work is slack, or he is sick (yes there is ssp, but that wont cover overheads.) Hence your argument appears not to tak account of those.
