Maytag disher won't wash

I have a 10 year old Maytag dishwasher. I can set the knob to wash and it will fill but when it gets to the wash cycle it won't wash. I can also get it to empty. It also will turn on when the door is open. What could it be?

Oops! In too much of a hurry. Should be Dishwasher, not disher.

I dont believe it, well i have been here long enough so perhaps i do.
Kevplumb posts a reply which says to look at the first post and what does the American poster do? ignore the reply, and post again anouncing a typo
