my friend has a problem with his car when he goes a short distance, he can take the key out the ignition and the car will still run any ideas what the problem might be

petrol or deisel?
depending on the age the fuel solenoid could be jamming open.

Replace the fuel shut off solenoid on the top of the injector pump. It has a single wire connection.
