We live in an end terrace, it had a simple loft conversion about ten years ago. In the loft space - mainly used for storage - the gable end is only single brick thickness (below this floor level is it is double thickness with a supporting buttress wall which looks like it was added sometime later).

In the loft I'd like to improve the insulation on the gable wall, probably by framing it out then using Celotex/Kingspan or wool type material. The finished wall doesn't need to be plastered.

The existing gable wall has had some internal effloresence since we've been here (~20 years), although the external surface doesn't suffer the same way.

What's the best way to approach this without causing damp problems?

Cheers.

When you say simple loft conversion? Structural roof alterations? staircase? fire doors?

Or a job that was never finished and signed off?

Or just boarded out for storage?

If the latter there's no real need to insulate this wall, the floor and insulated hatch should be keeping the house warm.

If you are storing heat sensitive stuff then have a read of this one:

In your case there will need to be a vapour barrier on the room side of the insulation.

Cheers deluks,

Interesting method. At the end of the linked thread you suggest using insulation backed plaster board - do you mean in addition to the two layers of foil board, or as an alternative on a conventional wooden frame?

Alternative. A cheaper and quicker way to take the chill off of a wall without losing too much space.
