I've been advised the back door step (which is north facing and shaded) is allowing damp to penetrating the stone. Can anyone please advise what product is best suited to stopping the water penetrating the stone, other than painting the step.

Thanks

Let me guess. You have a door without sill and the stone step or floor slab toe forms the threshold?

Yes the door doesn't have a sill and it is a stone step. We had a uPVC door which we had fitted sits in the middle of the stone. Initially we thought it was a leak with the door, however we have had it sealed and the problem continued.

You are unlikely to solve this problem unless you remove the stone step, and build up the the outer skin in bricks, fit a dpm membrane then concrete whatever is left.

A new door can be fitted with a conventional sill/threshold.

Sounds harsh but it is the only guarantee.

This all started when women stopped scrubbing/whitening their doorsteps. Get them back indoors  maybe some Grangers proofing is worth a try
