Joist hangers

Is it better to hang a bearer on the brick walls or use those hangers which fit into the mortar course and are bolted into the wall.

i am planning on doing some bearers, but someone has said these hangers direct into the wall are better and stronger.

any ideas?

We use these.

These hang directly off the masonry.

It is best to fix the hanger to the joist (notch a small amount of timber out of the joist bottom to allow for the hanger metal thickness say 4mm), then rest the hanger onto the masonry.

You can pop a couple of fixings into the masonry but they don't do an awful lot.
