Hi guys i have recently got a gas hob with a mains operated lighter however the cable is very short and wont reach my socket point , whats the best way of extending it, use an extentsion lead or something else?

i would advise "the something else route"
purchase some new equally rated cable of the correct length to reach the socket and connect it directly to the new hob and plug
as its not plugged in theres no risk of electrocution so you can take your time and ensure correct polarity within the hob!
its never wise to join cables if at all avoidable or to use extension leads for that matter
best of luck..come back if any problems encountered

A proper flex joiner, and a new length of flex...
see http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=12534&ts=45067
for example, or
http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=45173&id=16810
would be OK if you can keep it dry, though there are other makes.
These have screw contacts inside to take two pieces of flex. Probably possible to have hooked up under the worktop somewhere.
Otherwise an extension lead, but it will look rough.
resist the temptation to cut twist and tape, while it may work, it is neither strong nor waterproof and may bite back many years later.
