felt backed carpet: Use underlay?

I thought felt backed (not foam backed) carpet didn't need underlay? The bloke in Carpetright says it's best to avoid lines from the floorboards but is he just trying to get some extra cash? Does it depend on how uneven the floorboards are?

Depends how good your flooring is and butted together but you will get slightly movement of each edge of flooring unless they are T&G flooring. You may find the underlayer plus carpet foam backed too soft. I think the best way is to put down sheet of hardboard with a staple gun. Will also prevent draught under floorboard if it's on the ground level.

I take it you mean the hardboard joint then it would be a good idea to stop the edge lifting.

Sorry. No I meant the felt backed carpet - does this need to be stuck to the hardboard?
