hi
i have had some trouble with the starter motor on my 04 mondeo , it make a scrathcing like nosie when you try to start it , after afew attempts or if you move it a couple of inches it starts , a garage has told me it is a common fault with this car something to do with the flywheel

any ideas/advice would be gratful

If its a diesel could be a dual mass flywheel fault, don't know if petrols have them

thanks for the reply
it is a diesel , i have heard it may be the flywheel and starter motor
any advice on this ?

All you can do is remove the starter and see if there is any metal filings around the end that goes into the gearbox. If there is then very likley that you have a faulty Dual Mass Fly Wheel.

There is a fair chance that it is just the starter motor TBH as they fail all the time.

Starter motors have a finite life, mine on an Escort TD failed at 100K

removing the starter motor is the best option here,,

ensure you DISCONNECT the batteries... remove startor motor and look at the teeth on the end.. then inspect the flywheel.. its the bit that the starter motor teeth engage in the engine..

it may be both,, but the flywheel is designed to be alot tougher and robust than the starter motor teeth,, thus if a problem occurs, mostly the flywheel will be ok and its alot cheaper/easier to just replace motor.

thanks for all the advice i will be getting the sarter motor changed and will inspect the flywheel at the same time
cheers chris

i have a 52 plate tdci very common thing on the tdc flywheel gets worn and sheds filings everwhere, these get into the starter and beggers up the starter. can put a new starter on but it won't be long before it's doing it again, if the engine sounds very chattery on tickover the flywheel beggered and if you do the flywheel you will need to change the release bearring, looking around £900 at dealers, i had mine done at a local gearbox specialist, they maybe able to source parts a little cheaper and there labour rate will be better
