Fitting TRVs

Last year a British gas engineer fitted 2 new rads for me, both have TRVs on the return end. I would assume from what I've read that these are bi-directional TRVs.

I want to fit TRVs to the other rads in the house as it's been hard to balance and I think this might help, plus it sounds like best practice.

With the new rads I've found I have to open the flow valve a fair bit before the flow pipe even gets hot. If I fitted TRVs to The other rads in the house, what would be the key to balancing the rads? By adjusting the flow, or the thermostat return? If it's just a matter of adjusting the flow that's great. And to confirm, the TRV will do as good a job controlling the heat fitted to the return as to the flow?

Balancing with TRVs is exactly the same as without TRVs!

There are some nupties who dont think its necessary to balance rads with TRVs.

Check to see if the BG fellow left the lockshields fully open.

If so close them and open just one turn.

Both lockshields (on the flow, just confirming) both have to be open several turns before they'll get any heat up the pipe.

Here's a question, and perhaps it's just that the lockshield has a springy click to it, but the lockshield can be pressed down with a click, however I've adjusted it without pushing it down, is this some new type of valve with 2 settings or am I just looking into it too much?

I'm hoping that with the TRV's the system will be a bit better as it's hard to get all the Rads heating simultaneously & effectively

I would suggest you open all TRVs to max and then close all lockshields and then open exactly one turn as a starting point.
