sewage smell in house

We have an old property, circa 1880 and we're having problems with a sewage smell in the house. We've had a company jet the pipes and this included putting a camera down to check for leaks. Nothing found, and the smell continues. No evidence of trap at sewage drain and no vent pipe. Should we have a vent pipe fitted?
Our neighbours have fitted a downstairs toilet quite recently could there be a connection?

there should be a vent somewhere...I wonder if the Air Valve brigade have been at work on your neighbour`s vent - maybe the only one for several houses. Have a look @ the posts here regarding AAV`s Air admittance valves. Everybody wants one The name should give it away ...They let air IN ...not out/in like an open vent does.

Haven`t you got one? do you have an internal stack? Has a pigeon/bird made a nest /or is there a blockage at top of stack?

There probably might be, but unless they have put a durgo valve through your wall I wouldn`t have thought so. Is it coming from wash basin/ bath? won`t be toilet, all these have smaller traps. Is it a shared stack system? could be induced syphonage sucking the traps out of your appliances with your new neighbours bog, depends where it is...go around your house and check that every sink/washbasin and toilet has water in it, use a torch for sinks etc, if these are full your traps are ok, depending on how well you get on with your neighbour and with all of your family/mates hovering over each trap, ask him to pull the chain on his bog, look for any fluctuation/gurgling water coming back in to any of your sanitaryware, if this is ok, you need to repeat the above in your own home.

If you haven't got a soil vent pipe, but air admittance valves fitted instead, then this is the first thing to put right, but there are a lot of other things that cause sewage smells in the house - all easily remedied.
