I have a slight leak on the old what looks like copper bath waste and basin waste pipe work which looks like the size of 32mm and 40mm in size and I wish to change it, will I be able to join onto the old pipe with plastic compression fitting or will not be that easy any ideas would be good

useally can use a compression or use a fernco coupler.
so either 32mm or 40mm compression will do or the part in the photo

yes depending on what size the pipework is if it's 32 joining 40
