removing patches

How do I completely remove the glue used to attach a patch to a knit hat? My husband loved the hat but hated the patch. He took off the patch, but now there is an ugly patch of the adhesive still on the hat. I have tried the acetone nail polish remover and that had no effect. Any other suggestions?
