Marley Roof Tile Discoloration - 5 yr old home

Marley have responded saying that their position has not changed and therefore as far as they are concerned the case is closed, I am now looking for a roofing expert who will look at my tiles and say whether the paint peeling off is due to weathering or poor manufacturing. I am told this is the first step before legal action.

Does anyone know an expert I could use, I live in Cheshire.

I have been following this with interest, I am an indepenent Roofing Consultant and a Fellow of the Institute of Roofing, however I tend to specialise in Slate Roofs and Lead work, a fellow consultant who may be more suited to help you is Chris Thomas: www.thetiledroofingconsultancy.com
If he is unable to help, come back to me.

I have specified Marley Monarch concrete rooftiles for many years and used them on a conversion of a barn in 1995. These tiles virtually look the same as the day they were laid, but a 4 year old job has the coating flaking off, especially at the edges of the tile, wider and ridge ones. Marley have now washed their hands of it after saying that they were waiting for a weather opportunity to coat them..

I agree and want to get as many people together with similar problem. Marley have taken advise from their insurer who will not want to pay out for a duff batch, but when they realise that they will have to start paying legal fees and national press coverage they may change their tune.
I am another dog who will not sleep.

SNAP! we have exactly the same problem, as do two neighbouring houses. marley assessor came out in october 2009 and said he would send a report within 4 weeks and at some point the tiles would be re-coated....we heard nothing, despite e-mailing etc, and finally had a letter about a month ago saying they would do nothing about it. Our house was built in 2000 and the roof now looks awful on a dry day. ourselves and the neighbours have been wondering what to do next.....a joint response against marley sounds like a good idea...perhaps we should get watchdog involved.....

We've had the same problem with fading tiles and the same response from Marley - they will not admit liability. Our whole estate - 38 houses - have the same problem. Sign us up for the battle!

Just to advise anyone wanting more information on this subject in the Forum go to //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=250444. The Monarch & Marquess Tile coating failure seems to be widespead in Scotland. Marley have rectified some roofs, some have been agreed to be done and others they have said are natural weathering and are rejecting them. If your roof has lost its coating and is going white, it is a coating failure and not natural weathering so Marley must carry out remedial work. Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau for advice and contact www.consumerdirect.gov.uk for help.

Just had my refusal letter this morning (as expected). They made a reference to BS EN 490 justifying that aesthetic changes were allowed, but did not provide a direct quotation. I suspect they have purposefully misinterpreted the specification. Has anyone got a copy they can send me? I though I had it but I instead have BS EN 5534-1.

I thought I would just update the web site, we now have 14 people on our email list, with approximately 120 houses involved. Some have contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau and are taking action through them, others talking to solicitors. What I think we need is as many experts as possible who are prepared to say that the design of these tiles were flawed, the paint peeling off not only has a cosmetic problem, but also weakens the tile. If you are not on the email list and have the same problem please post on this web site and send an email to [email protected]

My parents house also has faded Marley tiles (Marquess I think). They've just received the same letter you're all describing, after having the assessor out to look around.

The roofs were installed in 2002/2003 and have faded significantly from their slate colouring, with the concrete now showing through

Thank you for contacting the Marley Legal Group.

Membership to the group has currently closed (July 2012) as we have so many members from all over the United Kingdom and we have raised enough money to commission a technical consultant's report via the group's solicitors on the Marley Monarch and Marquess tiles/slates.

If you or any others wish to apply for membership to the Marley Legal Group, should we decide to take Marley Eternit Ltd. to court, we would ask you to contact the Marley Legal Group's Coordinator asking to be added to the current waiting list of applicants to become a member of the group.
