Hi there,

Firstly let me start by saying i dont know anything about CCTV, but im looking for a budget option to fit to a new build (domestic) im currently on for myself.
Will be fitting some PIR lights to help with night recording.

Are these systems any good for domestic applications or a waste of time and money?

I have used one of those systems before, they are ok but not great and you can get much better for the money. TLC do some alright cameras but the DVR's are overpriced for what they are.

I tend to use cameras such as these

Dvr's

And then i use cat 5e cable with baluns and occasionally use shotgun RG59.

Cheers for the response.

When you say better can be had, in what terms? Picture quality, functions....

Also the cameras you mention are they better than the ESP ones as they are somewhat cheaper, i know they state they have a 20m IR range compared to the 8m of the bundled ESP cameras (unlikely either will reach that their stated ranges).

I find the user interface and the network viewing interface better on the Henrys DVRS than on the ESP. The ESP DVR is quite limited compared to the others, it only has 160gb hard drive. The ones which I tend to use off Henrys have good network functions and have other features like h.264 compression and dvd writers, vga outputs etc. Plently of features for future usage.

I recommend dvrs with dvd writers because if you ever needed to use the evidence, you can burn it straight onto a dvd.

The ESP camera is overpriced for what it is and I find the picture quality off the IR domes just as good if not better. I sometimes use the 480 TVL dome which is the next model up from the one I sent you. I prefer installing the dome style cameras because they also cover the holes which you drill for the cables.

Forgot to mention that the dvrs also have GUI graphical user interface which you can control with a usb mouse rather the using the on-board dvr buttons to scroll through menus and footage.

Do the Henrys DVRs need to be hooked up to a PC for remote viewing?

If so then is it possible to transfer files from the DVR to a PCs hard drive doing away with the need for a DVR with dvd writer?

For remote viewing you simply connect an network cable between the dvr and your router, the dvr's include a full manual which clearly shows you how to set it up.

I have one of the black H.264 4CH dvr's and I can also view the cameras via my Iphone too which is good.

for the pc backup you can either connect a usb lead between the dvr and your pc or you can plug a usb memory stick directly into the dvr and backup footage that way. I think you may be able to retrieve the footage via the network interface too.
