Warning light and no hot water? Please help!

Hello, I really hope someone can offer some advice/suggestions here...

I have a British Gas boiler fitted, it was installed a few months prior to us buying the house (it says so on the casing - 2004) but no manual was left for us.

Anyway, we have never had any problems with it (besides the odd clunking noise from time to time) until a couple of days ago. The heating was working fine but the hot water was nor working. We checked the boiler and the huge warning/hazard light on the front was flashing on and off and the pilot light was out. The light is also some sort of reset button as if you push it in and hold for 5 seconds the light goes out.

After a while the water started coming out hot again but the pilot light still goes off sometimes. Yesterday the warning light came back on again, and after resetting a couple of times the water was running hot again!

We don't have boiler cover, we are thinking of taking some out but you need to pass some sort of service before getting any cover!

Before I get the big yellow book out and start getting prices for call-outs, could anyone offer ANY suggestions as to what this problem could be.

I can't remember the boiler name off the top of my head as I am not at home, but am sure it is something like RD and then 2 or 3 numbers.

Please help!!

EDIT: OH has just asked me to add that this only happens when the heating is switched on, and also that it sounds like it is trying to ignite and then going off....but he's just as clueless as I am

British Gas dont make boilers! They rebadge other makers, often Ideal.

Without the RD number or a picture we cannot know which it is.

Clearly you have not had the boiler serviced for the last six years! We dont think much of that. Its probably a simple problem which routine services would have prevented!

As its apparently a gas related fault then we cannot give you detailed advice and I doubt you would have any skills to fix it yourself anyway.

So the advice is to call a competent engineer who specialises in repairs. British Gas will also repair boilers on a fixed fee basis. that would work out expensive if its only a minor problem as I suspect.
