Hi there,

I'm about to replace some skirting board and wondered whether its better to leave a gap underneath the skirting board and floor boards so that the carpet can be wedged in.

Or is it better to sit the skirting board pretty close to the floorboards so that the carpet 'butts' up neatly next to the skirting baord (and not poked underneath as in first method)?

Thanks in advance.....Phil

Skirting boards should always be fitted and (preforably) decorated prior to carpet fitting. These should be fitted tight to the floor.

The carpet achieves a snug fit by being trapped into a small gap between the gripper and the skirting board, which is angled downwards by the lift gained from the underlay.

in years gone by only rich familys could afford "floor covering"
the working class where stuck with exposed floorboards and skirting

the purpose off skiting is to look decorative protect the base off the plaster and prevent draughts around the edge off the floor :D ;)
