Hi All,

My name is Dave and I have been putting off finishing my project for too many years. Please help.

The project is a 'water feature' / pond. It is brick built for the large bit with a pump to draw water up to a narrow channel which then waterfalls out into the large bit again. At least that was the idea a few years ago.

I had planned to water seal everything by using Bondaglass G4 pond sealer, which seemed to do everything I needed - provided I had rendered the breeze blocks which part of the build contained.

All of my searching for rendering breeze blocks has resulted in great solutions for a decorative finish. I just want a render solution to seal my blocks to which I can apply my water seal.

Please, can anyone advise?

I have attached (I hope), a snap of the channel I want to render.

Many thanks to all of you

Dave

I would get a wire brush and get all the "crud" off the blocks, then mix up some SBR with cement into a slurry, brush this on your block work with horizontal strokes , Leave to dry then brush another coat on vertically, then scratch coat it with a 4-1 mix with w/proofer while this coat is still wet. Then leave for a few days then render it with a 5-1 mix (lime optional) and float up and sponge finish it. Easy eh? ;)

i know nothing about ponds or g4 pond sealer so i googled it, and it says not to use waterproofer as this will increase the density of the render and can inhibit penetration of the g4, if a waterproofing agent has been used, rub down the surface with an abrasive to obtain a key, sorry to butt in roy i just thought i would mention my find so the op wouldent make a mistake :) here is the link

No probs.. Steve just answered off top of my head....
Just think of the mistakes that must of been made before Google

Thanks Steve,

Do I need it with regards to what you said about not using a waterproofer with the G4?
well i have just clicked the link again and had a good read it doesent say not to use it, using it will certainly ensure a good key, if i was you i would follow roys instructions but without the waterproofer, then follow the instructions on the link for things like keeping it damp for 3 days and troweling it up to smooth finish ect ect :) http://www.ketteringkoi.com/acatalog/G4_Pond_Sealer.html

I am going to give this a go over the weekend, provided it doesn't rain (I'm in Scotland - currently raining)

I've got the SBR, I've got some fibre-glass threads (not sure if I need those), got the cement.

What I haven't been able to find is a mixing ratio and ingredients for the cement slurry.

Is it just cement and liquid (SBR + water)? If yes, how much SBR, how much water?

Again, any advice much appreciated.

Dave

one part water to one part sbr and neat cement opc here is the link to the sbr data sheet with all the information you will need for the week end http://www.ukpoolstore.co.uk/acatalog/SBR Waterproof Bonding Agent.pdf

Don't mix water with the sbr in your slurry. I would get a measuring jug and make your slurry 3-1 (cement to SBR) and give it a good mixing...Everything I mix when rendering I use a bucket and mix ratio's of sand, cement. lime by the bucket, and the additives, by what they say on the containers... The SBR I use Steve says 3-1 with cement and dont add water I think it is Cementone SBR,,,I will check again on Monday ,,, ;)

Thanks both.

I am going to be using Febond SBR. Can't find any mixing stats on that though.

So say I was using 1:1:1 would that really be say, 1 cup of water, 1 cup of SBR and 1 cup of cement?

Likewise for Roy's mix; 3 cups of cement and 1 cup of SBR?

Thanks

Dave
