lintel (catnic) question

Hi at the moment i am in process of building a 2 storey extention,i was wondering wether the standard catnic with the 100mm cavity is suitable for holding up the second storey the span is 2m looking at the catnic it dont look that strong or is there a particular one i should be using

Depends on weight of masonry you are using (brick, block, thermalite?) span of lintel, floor loads, any openings and their distance from the lintel.

Depends what you mean by "standard catnic" if you're thinking of the Cougar:-

Then yes, in a standard domestic application, with no weird loadings, it'll be fine.
 
As hotrod says, they are fine for basic loadings.. but as a rule of thumb if your floor span above is more than about 4-4.5m then you might wanna look at a CGH version.. Simplest method to check is phone catnic if in doubt..

edit: should probably add this is based on standard 100 block 100 brick cavity wall and timber floor at upper floor.. with no major windows on floor around the proposed opening

Thanks lads phoned keystone tech today they have spec a hdk-90(heavy duty lintel)its only gonna cost me £30 more than standard so i will go with that thanks again

Are you sure that's not £30 per metre more?

HD lintels are rather expensive.
 
Has your engineer not provided lintel references on their drawing?
