Vaillant Ecotec isolating valves

I may be being dumb, but can someone tell me please how to open and close the heating flow and return valves on a Vaillant ecotec boiler? There seem to be some lugs which prevent the valve spindle from turning; is a special tool required? I've tried with a screwdriver and just managed to chew the thing up.

I thought a small spanner was needed (quarter turn valve)

Don't use screwdriver ever use 3mm Allen key

large flat screwdriver once its been turned once, but first time always use an allen key or you will mash the valve.

Silly me, I didnt spot the hexagons inside the hole in the valve stem !!
