I have just read this on a US heating forum.

Hi. I live in MA and just bought a house with a 100-year old gas (steam) boiler, which I've been advised to replace.

i suspect they mean the cast iron heat exchanger is 100 years old. most likely the burner has been change a number of times over the years.

i have heard of old boilers being changed from soild fuel to oil and then gas

the boiler must be horribly inefficient...only in a US they could think it is a good idea to keep boilers 100 years old going.

wonder how low the efficiency it has? 50%? lower?
