Hi,

The shaver socket in my bathroom buzzes when not in use (nothing plugged in).

It has a 230V and a 115V socket.

Is this normal?

Thank you.

Yes, they can do this as they get older. It's caused because they contain an isolation transformer, and the laminations can start to vibrate a little with age. If it worries you then just replace the whole socket assembly with a new one.

Thank you for your reply. Do you know if this wastes electricity and is it safe?

It probably does mean the transformer is slightly less efficient, but in a transformer of that size it really isn't going to make a noticeable difference to your bill. I believe some newer designs only apply power to the primary of the transformer when a plug is actually inserted into the shaver socket.
