We have a Glow worm boiler with a pressurised water tank system. We have no hot water - the boiler is 14 years old but has been serviced every year an dis still woking. The plumber has told us we need to replace a part of the hot water tank that adds cold water to the hot as it comes out of tank?? We replaced another pump on the tank about 3 weeks ago for £170 this time he is asking for £180 - should we do it or replce the whole system for a combi boiler - we have a 3 bed detatched house with 3 kids, ensuite and family bathroom??

Can't see one - just wanted to know though if this system has probably reached the end of its shelf life if it is starting to go wrong as it is nearly 14 years old.

The part your guy is referring to is more than likely the blending valve. Depending on type can cost £100+ to buy. If you have a thermal store then it may be a scale problem and a blending valve will not be the cure. As its 14 yrs old then poss time to consider replacement.

£180 to change a pump..... Robbing GIT 15/50 is £50-60 tops and 20 min to change
Depends what system he's got, if it's an old boilermate and he's replaced the grundfos pump with another grundfos then thats at least £70 plus £20 to £30 for inhibitor after draining it down ( we all know the pump isolators Gledhill used will leak if touched) - that leaves "the robbing git" with about £80 for a few hours work ?

a couple of hours to change a pump WHAT>..
grundfos pump is £60 tops. 10-15mins to drain and say 15 min (MAX) to swap pump, another 10-15 to fill back up. Thats 45mins all in.

Pump £60
Inhibitor 2litres of the good stuff £20

£80 parts

Labour 60mins at a push Thats £100 an hour

Even if it took 2 hours which it wont thats £50 hr

If your happy robbing people then fair play, i hopw your garage does the same to you next time your van is in for a service.

I'm certainly not into ripping people off !
I was trying to suggest to the op that the job may not have been as straightforward as a straight pump swap.

If he thinks it only ever takes 20 mins he's bound to feel ripped off.
