I have a potterton Suprima 30 boiler that makes a noise like a steam train when the gas is alight it still heats hot water and CH, but the noise is constant and regular ie not random.

No sound effects unfortunately bu tif you say this you'll get the idea

gas on, Chuff Chuff Chuff Chuff Chuff Chuff until gas off

Could be the fan, or could be kettleing, neither sound like chuff chuff chuff though  so not sure

Sounds like sludge in heat exchanger, get some c,h cleaner in.

The boiler is 14 years old, what does kettleing sound like?

Pump is on speed 3, could it be the pump wearing out reducing water flow?

OK noise now consistent with kettling. Tried to drain water out of E/F cistern via drain cock just above boiler on return line, nothing came out when fully open, not even with pump running :( . Drained enough out through the lowest Rad bleed screw to get "Sentinel X200 x 1ltr into feed pipework. Carton says no need to remove, but surely it will mobilise all the Cr4p so how long would you leave it in for and would you remove it and flush the sytem.
