Is it safe to fit a outdoor electric socket close to the box that contains the gas meter? the box being a surface mounted inspection type.

You can fit it where you like, as long as it's not in or on the gas meter box.

Keep away from any pipework.

Fit a socket away from such enclosures. Get one that allows you to fit the cover when the plug is inserted. See the MK Masterseal range. Ensure you have RCD protection.

Is it safe to fit a outdoor electric socket?
Hard to say. In general yes, it is quite possible for it to be safe.

In this case?

How will it be supplied?

Do you know the rules regarding spurs from ring finals, cables concealed in walls and RCD protection?

Do you know about safe isolation procedures?

Do you know how to assess environmental influences so that you can select the right type of socket and cable and install them appropriately?

Do you know how to size cables with regard to current carrying capacity, voltage drop and fault loop impedance?

Do you know that installing an outside socket is notifiable?

Do you know how to test your work, and do you have access to the appropriate test equipment?
