Both brown wires together in the unmarked connection on the right in your picture.
The blue on the right of the 'old' rose marked with a brown sleeve to L.
The blue on the left to N.
Yellow/greens to earth.

If you tried connecting both browns to L and both blues to N you may well have fried your switch.

Normally the switch has a sleeve on the neutral to denote it's a "live" return,
If it's a neutral how can it also be a live, or vice-versa?

This needs to be connected to the positve terminal of the spotlight as when the switch is in the on position this then becomes live.
It's an AC appliance - it does not have a positive terminal.
