new chimney for wood burner

hello all. we are currently in the process of submitting plans for a new single storey extension to the rear of our property. we would like to install a wood burner into the new extension.

our Q is, what rules & regs surround the installation of a wood burner if not being attached to existing chimney? will the new chimney for the wood burner have to stand a certain height externally, and be a certain distance from windows etc externally?

we do have an exisiting chimney which we could open up again in our dining room, could the wood burner chimney be fed into the existing chimney via our dining room wall, it would have a horizontal angle rather than vertical, until it reaches the exisiting chimney.

as you can tell i know nothing about chimneys....your assistance as always is appreciated

I assume your initially putting in a planning application so you won’t need much detail if any for that. Once your application is approved, you then need to decide if your extension is to be built under a full plans submission or a Building Notice, this dictates how much detail you will need to submit on all aspects of the build in advance. For stoves specifically, Part J Building Regs, is what you need to comply with;

The fire installation & flue will be inspected for Building Regs compliance along with the rest of your extension.

In addition to a flue/chimney you will need a constructional hearth, ventilation & a notice plate giving details of the installation. There are other considerations regarding the type of materials you should use around a stove due to the heat they generate, for example Gypsum plaster or plasterboard shouldn’t be used as it will not withstand more than 49 degrees C & will break up.
