3" will do providing you do not have to pack out to much.
atleast get an inch and a 1/2 of the screw into the stud

Much better to drill clearance holes and screw it. Any packing out you have to do is a doddle with screws. Not so easy o do with nails.

I meant, pack it out as in ensuring that the lining is plumb, straight, square etc. An extra 1/4 hr spent ensuring the door lining is just so can save 1/2 hr when it comes to hanging the door in it.
The door should fit the lining, if the lining is installed correctly.
