Cleaning a slate hearth

Have a slate hearth that's marked from the fire and some rain coming down the chimney.

Someone told me to clean it up with wire wool and wd40! Does anyone know if this is right and will I wreck my hearth?!

Linseed oil will bring it up absolutely lovely.

You need to remove water staining with vinegar or lemon juice.
