can i lighten mahogany handrail?

is this possible at the moment it has a mahogany varnish, are there paints available to go over this after a light sand to may be oak colour which will still show the grain?

I'm afraid the blunt answer is, no. You can buy wood bleaching agents, but they won't lighten mahogany stain enough to allow an oak finish.

all that will happen is you will get a darker shade off both shades combined

its very flat on top and pretty flat on the sides also, ill look out for it hopefully they still sell it

It is quite old so could be discontinued.
