I'm in the process of finishing a basement and I'm wanting to make sure I add enough light for the room.

I will be adding recessed lights into the ceiling.

Is there a science to figuring out how many to add? The room is a multi-purpose room and is 13x24.

I'd imagine you should aim for 10 lumens per square foot or so (converted from my rule of thumb of ~ 30 candelas per square metre) if you are going to be doing anything involving concentration. Less (say 10cd/m2) is OK if you are using it as a store room only.
I hope that is the appropriate US unit - if not I apologise in advance.
You might be better asking a US based site - remember our electrics are 240V, and many of the standard lamp wattages and fitting sizes are quite different - remember even silly things differ widely, like your lamps usually screw into the holder, ours are usually quarter turn bayonet fitting. icon_smile.gif
