Hi,

I need some help on changing a PIR sensor I have which switches light (max 1000w) to a alarm trigger.

We are running on standard 230V.

I think I need an mains contactor but I am not 100% sure what size or basically how to do.

Any help and ribbing gratefully received!

A simple relay with a 230 volt AC coil is all you need.

The two pole version here fro example

http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/08c7/0900766b808c7c04.pdf

The four pole version is available from RS components

RS Stock No. 623-7337 Manufacturer Finder Manufacturers Part No. 58.34.8.230.0060SMA

Depending on the type of PIR you may need to fit a snubber across the relay coil to absorb any energy that "leaks" through the PIR's switch when it is OFF

I use the following across the coil

Capacitor 0.047uF micro Farads 250 volts AC in series with a resistor 100 ohms

Which come pre-packaged as a contact suppressor from RS Components

RS Stock No. 206-7847
Manufacturer Evox-Rifa
Manufacturers Part No. PMR209MB5470M100

There are other sources of the contact suppressors

Good choice of sensor. Good design and well made.

You may not need a snubber as that sensor ( ! am 99% certain ) has a relay switching its output and the leakage through it is too small to keep a relay coil held operated.

If it is also switching a lamp with a filament then then there will be no need for a snubber as the lamp filament will deal the any leakage.
