chimney breast decoration

hi newbie here.
need help please with preping a chimney breast before wallpapering, have noticed rust down each side that may stain the wallpaper. rust seems to be from a strip of metal on running down external corners. can the rust be covered and what with?

The rust is probably coming from the the corner beads and if left it will ruin your work, by sanding remove all traces of rust and apply two coats of an oil based undercoat. Make sure that the first undercoat is applied directly after sanding, if left the rust will reform.
