Will soon be starting work on my garage conversion, I've had the structural engineer round to take a look at where steels need to go etc.

I am looking to do much of the work myself to keep costs down and need a little advice on the correct procedure etc.

Once the engineer has drawn up detailed calcs/drawings do I submit a building notice?

I don't really want the expense of and architect so have drawn some scale drawings of existing layout and a scale drawing of roughly what I want to achieve.

If I am to submit a building notice will the BC officer then come round and tell me what I need to do to meet current building regs? i.e. Will he say I have to excavate existing garage floor slab to a certain depth and insulate etc and advise me on depth of foundation strip for brick infill/window??

Also at what intervals will the BC want to inspect?

I will have a proffesional builder round for the RSJ work and brickwork but want to do alot of the donkey work myself.

Any guidence gratefully received as looking to crack on with this asap!

Your LABC primary function is one of inspection & approval; although the will give advice on specific proposals, they are not a consultancy/advisory service & you will be expected to do your own research to ensure the work complies with relevant Building Regulations. Most if not all of your questions will be answered on the Planning Portal;

Here is a link which outlines what you will need to do;
http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/garageconversion/

This explains the approval process;

Here are the approved BR documents;

You can make a Building Notice submission on-line; type you postcode into this link to locate your specific LABC;

Planning permission is not normally required for a garage conversion but you should check your individual circumstances.

One steel to replace internal garage wall and another to increase the opening at the rear end of the garage. (The new room will become a kitchen diner with folding doors across the back wall.
