Dear all

Just looking for some advice on what chimney liner to go for.

I have found some 316/316 stainless steel liner for £25 per square metre with 10 year guarantee. See link
http://www.qualitystoves.co.uk/quattro-flue-liner-316l316l-grade-p-898.html

The stove is 5kw and I believe this liner will be more than adequate for the job.

They also do a 904/904 grade stainless steel for £35 per metre. This has 20year guarantee.

Has anyone got any experience with the dif types or with cheaper linings failing?

Any help/thoughts/advice would be a big help:)

316 is normally found in domestic installs as you would normally find 904 for more commercial/industrial usage.
The rating is to do with the temps it can tolerate.
It will be a thicker gauge.
When it states 904/904 that means both inner and outer skins are that grade.
As you will come across 904/316, which means the inner and outer skins are different grades.

Thanks, I figured that was probably the case so think I'll get 316/316 tomorrow:)

Do u know the difference between 316 and 904 steel?

They are simply different grades of stainless steel see S S grades. See also http://www.fluesupplies.com/product_info.php?products_id=400 for a mixed steel liner The difference is I believe resistance to corrosion, pitting etc. Unlikely that 904 is thicker, it does cost more to produce though!

A quote from a flue specialist is "There are two grades available, 316L and a higher grade of 904L which is suitable for the extreme conditions found with coal based solid fuel installations"

Thanks Blagard.

So this now brings me to think that for an wood burner I maybe need to go for 316/904...I think I'll give them a bell and see what they recommend(thought I'd get some advice first so I didn't end up getting unnecessarily sold the most expensive)

Thanks for advice

I was confused about the whole 316 / 904 stuff too, I mean who's to know which one is best? Well as it happens some guy wrote a simple guide explaining it - https://flues2you.wordpress.com/what-type-of-flue-liner-do-i-need/ - thankfully!

Looks like 904/904 is the best - unless your fire isn't going to be used heavily, in which case 904 / 316 should suffice (and is cheaper too!)

I would call the posting timely, as it was just the info I needed prior to installing a pellet boiler.

All useful information is just that...
