I would like to install an outside socket to power a pond pump. I used to have a cable going from the pump, through a hole drilled in the kitchen window frame, and plugged in to a socket in the kitchen! Since having new uPVC double glazing installed, I really don't want to do this! How easy would it be to put an outdoor type socket on the outside wall, and how would I go about it?

Add a purpose made outdoor socket to kitchen wall and wire into RCD protected ring.

This is where Ban shouts Part P.

For the pond pump you will need a masterseal socket - the type that maintains its IP rating with something plugged in. They are gray and expensive.

Why not have the pump cable go straight into the house through a small hole drilled in a mortar line in the wall? Then just plug it in inside. Simplist / cheapest!

You can now buy a powerbreaker kit that comprises:

IP55 socket, flex and RCD plug.

Part P!

But back to the plot - what sort of cable supplies the pond pump, and where does it run? Does it just trail across the ground?

Thanks for all the replies. I liked the one about drilling a hole through the wall - very similar to my original solution!
