Installed new power shower in Jul 04. Has worked well for the last 10 months but over the last month the ELCB was tripping out when the shower was running. Now it is at te stage where the ELCB trips as soon as the shower is turned on. This pulls down all the sockets in the house. The shower switch is still lit and the main circuit breaker is also staying on. I checked the shower and all the wires seem in good shape. Not sure why the ELCB is being pulled down as the shower and Sockets are on 2 seperate circuits.

it may be the shower element has a hole, and is going down to earth, seen it before

The shower switch is still lit.....

Thats what prompted me to ask what exactly the device protects.

The ELCB is linked into all the sockets circuits.
Turns out the some of the insulation on the pump motor windings had broken down. took the service guy a new element, and stat before he found out.
