Not enough information. Did it happen suddenly? Was anything interesting going on before it happened? Can you switch the MCBs off and on again? Have you recently drilled any holes in walls? How old is your installation, and how well was it done?

You probably won't be able to safely isolate the consumer unit while you poke about with it it, your mate might well be right, but unless you've got very good life assurance and your wife doesn't like you, best to call out an electrician.

If you've only recently moved in there could be all sorts of dodgy things you don't know about.

It just struck me - if you've got a good quality, very modern installation, you might have an RCD controlling the sockets - this will look a bit like a second main switch in the CU. If your does look modern and good quality, see if it has. It operates rather like those RCD adapters you use with a lawn mower, but bigger, and could havce been tripped by. e.g. a ketttle in poor condition. the RCD will have a "test" button and a "reset" switch. Usually you have a split load with sockets protected and lights not.

When some RCD's trip, the switch only trips half way to off.

This is so you know it has tripped and not been phsically turned off.

It can often look like it is still up when looking from below.

You would need to pull the switch fully down to off, and then back up to on.

did the poster not say "No trips in fuse box" implying there are no mcbs? although i would agree there may be an external rcd

I interpreted that as meaning that none of the MCBs in the CU had tripped - but you could be right! icon_confused.gif

Thats how I read it aswell icon_wink.gif Assuming he thought none had tripped, but the RCD had.

His silence makes me assume he now has power to his sockets icon_lol.gif
