I am doing a complete rewire and am looking at the X10 stuff. Are there any experiances of reliability etc and is it really worth all the effort?

I've not used the X10 stuff, but I think you have to be very selective if you're going to use home automation wiring. It's a specialist job really; easy enough to install but what about when it goes wrong? Why do you want to use this system? In principal it's a good idea but you have to think about the long term too. You can do lots of clever things with conventional wiring if you plan it well, and without the agro.

I would like to echo what spark has said, its great in theory, but when (not if) it goes wrong...............

you had to feel sorry for the bloke though. it goes to show its true what they say. the more complicated it is the more complicated to fix (and the more to go wrong)

Wheres your spirit of adventure?

Some of it does look a bit OTT but I do like the idea of being able to programme the lights to operate when we are on holiday so we don't get robbed.

Some of the audio/TV stuff looks interesting too, and what about surfing the web from what ever room you happen to be working - e.g the sun room on a nice summers day?

I have a bunch of X-10 around the house and, apart from one module, it works great.
There is no additional wiring, just replace switches or sockets with the modules and away you go.
The others can just be plugged into the socket directly so that they can be moved around the house.
I use IBM's version with their software and have it switch the lights off and on in the morning and evening.
It is also excellent when you go away from home for any time.

David,

a little late after your question, but yes I use X10 here in the UK and is a great way of controlling things. I have been gradually changing things over and with a lot of X10 devices they are plug in so can be taken with you and a great if you are just building your house and in the position to wire accordingly. It also a lot cheaper than many of the proprietary system around too.

My only gripe is why the units in the UK cost so much more than in the US!.

And we wonder why people are getting fatter...jesus, talk about lazy, what is the issue with getting off your arse to perform a simple function!! :D

I knew someone who had a home-automation (not sure if X-10) that caused him some annoyance. He set it up do such things as turn lights on and off and turn the TV off at a set time. However, his routine then changed but he couldn't be bothered to reprogramme the system. So 11 o'clock every night the lights went out and the TV turned off so he would have to get up and press the override button on the plugs and turn the lights back on.

If you just want to be able to surf the web from whatever room, why not install a network? It is a lot less faff and you can also get audio/visual modules to send video over the cat-5 cables.

Home automation is cool but if you can achieve what you want with less hassle, take the easier route!

sayin that, she will probably read this and beat me up...again

I hope she doesn't read this Ian, if she does I don't think you will be able to type anything for sometime :D

I would be more worried at her wanting to read up on DIY... kinda makes us all a bit redundant then doesn't it?

Ian might have to turn his hand to another form of DIY if he upsets her too much....
