Our hot water is way too hot, so we called a couple of plumbers and were told the hot water tank was furred up and would need replacing. This has now been done , though the water temp is still way too hot. The setting on the boiler (ideal mexico) is at its lowest. We were told it was likely not the boiler thermostat as it was "cutting in" ok. Any help much appreciated

Call them back if the tank was replaced to cure the problem.

I assume you have a fully pumped system with thermostat control on
your cylinder if it has been replaced.

Do you also have an immersion heater fitted.

We have a gravity fed system.

The cylinder replaced in the bathroom is thermostat controlled, though the power is turned off.

A downfall of gravity systems is that this time of year you need your boiler stat turned up high to heat the rads suffiiently. This in turn affects your hot water temp. The only cure is to turn you boiler stat down low or have the sytem converted to a fully pumped system. it would not be wasted money to do this as when you have a new boiler fitted this would have to be done anyway to conform to current regs.

a slightly cheaper option is to install a 2 port valve linked with a cylinder stat running off a 240 v supply in the cupboard if you have one,, once the set temerature on the stat is reached the valve cuts the flowfrom the central heating to the cylinder preventing it from overheating though it wont stop the boiler cutting out, for this you need the more expensive option,,, a motorisation wich includes tying in motorised valves stats and programmer with your boiler,,, hope it helps
