I wish to install a small 2-way consumer unit in an outbuilding. The supply for this would come from a spare 32 amp fuse way in my existing consumer unit.

I have read that if you use an RCD on the main supply to the outbuilding then you should not connect the supply earth core to the earth terminal in the new consumer unit. Instead it says use a 6mm single core earth cable to connect the new consumer unit earth terminal to an earth electrode driven into the ground next to the building.

Can somebody please confirm if this is the way it should be done? If this is true can somebody please explain why it has to be done this way?
