Old Hotpoint Washer leaking

After being gone on vacation for a couple of weeks, Our Model WLW 37000BBLWH began making a loud rubbing noise at the beginning of the washing cycle. After a time, during that use, the noise would go away. Expecting this to be a one-time event, we were surprised to learn that it would make the noise at the beginning of each use from that time on. At some point later we noticed leakage from underneath.
Does anyone have a suggestion??? My wife says the washer is about 20 years old.
